Expect physical activity. Wear comfortable clothing that will not restrict your movements. You will be bare foot in class because you will slip in socks. You will learn basic stances, punching, kicking and blocking. You will not leave as a black belt.
As a colored belt, you are learning different techniques starting with the very basics and slowly getting more complex. There is no secret that will unlock special abilities. Nothing you will learn will make you able to instinctively block or strike magically. You achieve that through repetition. Through repeating the moves, correctly, thousands of times, you develop the ability to move reflexively.
You will eventually need a membership to the Rec Center. You can find their fee schedule on their website.
Beyond that, usually once you reach your yellow belt, there is an annual USTF fee.
Testing and tournament fees are separate.
Classes are more than just practicing kicks and punches, moving up and down the floor. Though there will be plenty of that.
You will learn patterns through which you will acquire new techniques, movements and timing.
Step-sparring teaches distance and spacing and combinations.
Through your Ho-Sin-Sul you will learn releases, chokes, take-downs, falls, and more.
Beyond all that, you will learn the history of taekwondo, the lineage of your instructor and much about yourself.
That is somewhat up to you. There are 4 tests a year around the state of Wyoming. If you practice 5 days a week, you can usually move through to green belt, or 6th gup, pretty quickly. Beyond that, it takes an average 6 months to be ready to test. You never lose anything you learned. You must remain proficient at all of it, all while acquiring more and more.
